FairFX Travel Card Review

FairFx - one of the best prepaid cards on the market

Fair FX Travel CardThe FairFx prepaid Mastercard is designed to be a currency card, which means that you load it up with foreign currency when travelling abroad. It offers highly competitive exchange rates compared with Post Offices and most currency exchanges.

When it comes to ordering your card, you will be asked to select your payment currency. If you want to use your card to avoid Ryanair credit card fees, make sure you select the option to buy pounds sterling when you apply.

Application is online only, and there is a one-off £9.95 application fee, which is less that the charges incurred by a single return Ryanair flight! There is a promotion currently running on this card, so if you apply soon the application fee could be waived.

You have to load at least £100 onto the card when you first apply, but, because the card is accepted by all Mastercard retailers, any remainder left on the card after you book your Ryanair flights can be spent on other transactions.

It generally takes between five and seven working days for the card and the PIN to be delivered, so make sure you order in plenty of time if you are aiming to book flights for a specific date.

Using the FairFx card to avoid paying Ryanair credit card fees

If you want to use this prepaid card to avoid Ryanair credit card fees and save yourself the maximum amount of money, there are a couple of things to bear in mind in order to keep any fees or charges as low as possible:

  • Only top up the card online using a debit card. Debit card top-ups are free, while topping up with a credit card will incur a 1.5% charge.
  • The card will be valid for three years. However, provided you have topped it up at least twice during that period, you will be given a new card automatically.

As long as you follow these tips, after the initial application fee the only charge you should pay for the card will be a 1.5% transaction fee. Which means that, on a flight booking price of £40, you'll only pay 60p.
